There is a lot in life that is real tough to digest. Some things you can’t even believe made it’s way into your mouth, but there it is...seems at least half of you wanted it there for some twisted and complicated reason…
Here’s the thing- we can help ourselves out. We’ve got to! Of course, with the gracious assistance of the plants.
We can focus all day on what to eat and what not to eat. That food good, that food bad; that opinion good, that opinion bad. The truth is, friend, it’s time to switch the focus out to in and look at your ability to digest. To digest is to absorb what you need for nourishment and fuel, then let the rest go. Digestion is transformation!
That all said, sometimes that badass digestive system could use a little support.
Here is where the Bitters come in. Humans evolved eating bitter plants. Traditions all over this earth have bitter food and drink woven into the culinary cultural fiber. Humans have refined letting their food be their medicine. Here in the good ole’ US of A bitter flaves have been lost along with the customs of our immigrant grandparents, great grandparents and great, great grandparents.
Bitter flavor translates to ‘sup bod, get ready for food’. Bitter flavors get your mouth a’ salivating- ever noticed that? It’s called the ‘bitter reflex’! Your mouth is your first digestive organ. Your bitter inspired saliva contains enzymes that begin the process of breaking down your food. Next, your digestive system gets the memo and bile produced by the liver gets released by the gallbladder- bile breaks down your food into parts that turn into YOU and the energy you need to dance to Beyonce’s ‘Sorry’.
So what the heck does this have to do with body care products? Many folks reach out to ask me about eczema, hormonal acne and food sensitivities. These issues are very often symptoms of a digestive system out of whack, the liver being at the center of it all.
Fat and the Moon made a bitters as starting point to help turn some healing attention inwards. Radical Self Care starts within.
Plant medicine supports systems. Mad props to the plants: Gentian: Gets the blood flowing to the upper digestive organs. One helluva bitter root.
Chamomile: Tonic and bitter to upper digestive tract, especially helpful for digestion issues related to stress responses.
Mugwort: Artemisia’s magic aids the system in digesting fats.
Yarrow: Yarrow’s bitter is all about tonifying boundaries- energetically as well as physiologically.
Anise: Eases the stomach, harmonizes the formula.
Directions: Drop a few drops of the Bitter directly on the tongue 15 minutes to a half hour before you eat. Do this on the regular for best results. You can also get fancy and add a half dropper to a glass of seltzer- apéritif style, and drink 15 minutes to a half hour before a meal.
